Finally heading to the Isles of Scilly

A few days ago, we left Fowey for St Just in Roseland, then carried on to Falmouth. From there, we were heading to the Isles of Scilly.

Going to the Scillies has been on Steph’s wish list for a very long time. When we sailed round the British Isles, the weather and opportunity weren’t quite right to get there. Being able to visit before leaving the UK, and effectively use the islands as our departure point, was fantastic.

We left Falmouth at 22:30 for an overnight passage. The wind was roughly Force 4 from the north, which suited us nicely. We motor-sailed towards the Lizard, then switched the engine off. We were greeted by loads of dolphins, and the sailing was really, really good.

Our general rule is to reef overnight, pretty much whatever the weather, so we had one reef in the main and the genoa partly furled. As dawn broke and the wind built, we rolled away a little more of the genoa.

We anchored just off Great Ganilly. After a night on passage, it was good to be there. Our buddy boat, Katisha, joined us a little later.

Steph had waited a long time for this one. We couldn’t wait to get ashore and see what the Scillies had in store for us.
